Evaluation

At the beginging of our assignemnt we got put in large groups of 10 as a group we decided that the best thing to split up into smaller groups of five because we had two radio shows to make and that would be the best thing to do. At the time i thought this was a really good idea and i thought it would work out well between the 10 of us. My group that i was in were olivia, Jack, Weeze and ella. I have worked closely with all of these people before so i thought that i wouldnt have a problem. We came up with some great ideas and we decided that we would call our show Afternoon Delight. We got all our audience reasearch together and worked out what music we should play and what sort of topics we should talk about. If i was to do something similar in the future i would take more attention to detail when it comes to audiences and what they like. This is because the Audience are the listeners and without them you haven't got a
radio show. The run up to the show was a bumpy one because i didnt feel that we gelled as a group. Although we are all very good friends outside of college, we had lack of communication when it came to the assignment. A few of the group didnt spend alot of there time on the assignment and they didnt care about what was happining when it came to the actual radio show. They were prepare to sit back and watch the rest of the group. I dont take loads of credit for how well our radio show came out, but i do belive i took part and gave my oppinion when it was needed. I did do some of the written work and was co-presenter of the main show. I will admit that Ella and Weeze did really well on the show, and worked very hard. Although our hearts wernt in it as much as other assingmnets they did try very hard to  make the final product well. We chose ella to be main presenter because she has a good tone to her voice and we belived that she would do the best job because her personality comes through when she talks. I was Co-presenter, i was pleased at with that job  role because i still got to be on the mike but i was not in charge if anything went wrong. Although i usually like taking a back seat when it comes to my job roles i have realised that i want to start doing bigger jobs and putting more responsibilty on myself, i wont learn unless i do things wrong so i will be looking to do bigger
job roles in the future. Weeze got put on the other mic, and we decided that we didnt want more than 3 presenters because we didnt want the show to sound overcrouded or unprofessional with loads of people talking at the same time. On the actual show we ended up with more than one person on the mic and i dont think this sounded as good. Also we had Weeze doing technical side of myriad and i think she needed more practice at it because in rehersals we had Ella doing it all. All in all i think we did well as a group and they would be the things i would change.

Treatment

Working Title: Music Based Programming
Format: The editing technology we will use is obviously the radio room, and mirad the programme on the radio software. There will also be a webcam in the radio room so we can record the show and play it back.
Duration: The duration of the whole radio show will be 1hour long
Synopsis: We will be doing a 1hour radio show called Afternoon Delight and the theme is Children In need. We will be playing past children in need songs including the new song from 2010. We will be having small features and jingles that fit in with the show.
Style: The style we have chosen to do is light-hearted, funny and relaxed as it is an afternoon show so we know people will be listening to something that is relaxed and not too hardcore. Our narrative will be girley, loud and clear so that our listeners can enjoy listening to us.
Intended Audience: our intended audience is 15-24 year olds, most likely students who enjoy socialising, sports and Music.
Rationale:  Our programme fits in well with Children in need because we have made it all about the audience and have included some light hearted features in there. We are also talking about some good and comical topics that relate to our audience. We have our playlist that fits in well with our intended audience.
Feasibility: We have spoken to Phill Middlham and have included a great feature for the programme which is an exclusive and will be broadcasted on the day we record our programme Live.
Budget: We didn’t need a budget for this project because we didn’t have to buy anything.
Deadline:  Friday 5th November.

Playlist

A playlist is one of the most important part of a radio show because you want to get it right with your audience so they don’t change the radio channel.  I have looked at a lot of playlists for different radio shows such as Galaxy and Radio One and they all contain the same sort of songs because they have the same audiences. As our show Afternoon Delight also has the same audience as both of these shows. We have come up with some of our favourite songs because we are the intended audience. We have also come up with chart music and music that are aimed to our audience. A playlist is what they want to hear because you don’t want to loose out on the audience by playing a song that they don’t want to hear.

Audience Profile

As a group we carried out a questionnaire on 50 students aged 15-24. We asked them 6 multiple choice questions about there interests and what radio stations they like to listen too. From the results we have chose 3 questions that we thought where  the most important for getting information on what context to have in our radio shows.

As predicted the most 3 common interests for students aged 15-24 are music, socialising and sports. Being students ourselves we have decided to add weekly gossip, stories and small features that are comical. We are also including a short feature for the news so the boys in our group can read out about the latest sports news and gossip. Obviously the main context of our radio show is the music and we have carefully selected a playlist on the latest songs and chart music.

The most popular music that is listened to is RnB, also Pop music was a common choice too. Luckily the music in the chart is mainly RnB and Pop music. We have decided that in our show we will talk about different songs that have been released over these two genres.

A Big part of our radio show is when to air it live. From the questionnaire we have found out that most students listen to the radio either Morning, Afternoon or Evening. We have decided to do an afternoon show because it fits in well when we can go on live during Children in need.

Radio Analysis

Asda FM
Asda FM was launched on the 7th September 1991. It plays daily around Asda stored in the UK and is one of Britain’s biggest radio stations ever. It broadcasts to 18 million shoppers and 167,500 staff every week. Asda FM use its advertisements to manipulate shoppers to buy there products. They advertise “The DVD of the week” and have features that talk about named Brands such as Hovis and Heinz. They also talk about special offers they have on in store that week. Asda FM play “feel good” music that will cheer there shoppers up and get them feeling happy and cheerful whilst there shopping. This will encourage the customers to come back too. Asda Fm also has in store listener’s texting into them asking for requests on songs. The presenters are fun and chatty to the store and enjoy broadcasting over the UK to Asda stores. There Audience is a wide variety because all ranges from 16+ go food shopping, and because Asda specialize in other things such as CD’s and electronical goods there audience becomes bigger because different items interest different people. Asda Fm presenter is usually a male with a cheesy tone of voice, this is to encourage shoppers when they are buying food in store that day. The presenter doesnt pause much and its past is faster than what he would usually speak with a deep monotone to his voice. On Asda Fm the presenter isnt always on air, alot of the time it is just music from a playlist and alot of adverts because it is an in-store radio station. When there is a presenter there mode of address is direct because they are speaking directly to there shoppers in stores over England. There not too formal its more about getting the message across on what offers they have on that day. Asda FM interact with the audience by Texts and shout outs they read outs texts so that the listeners can hear it in store while there shopping. Asda Fm is a In-store radio station so the contect of the programme is mainly adverts and happy songs for the shoppers.

BBC Radio 1

Radio 1 is broadcasted over England every day. With all different shows and presenters to try and fit in with their target audience. Radio 1 is much more than a normal radio show because they have live music, new music; phone INS, events and much more. Radio 1 is also linked up to Twitter and facebook and have podcasts to show its much more than a radio show. There target audience are 15-24 year olds and there secondary audience are up to 30 year olds. They are constantly changing their updates on fashion, places to go and gossip to fit in with their target audience. There website is funky and its easy to navigate around it. Radio 1 have over 40 presenters who all do different shows within there weeks schedule. They keep it light hearted and fun for the day time, with lots of chat about the weekly events and what other presenters are doing on there shows. On the night shows they often use more than one presenter and have something called the surgery where people can call in with there problems and get professional advice. They use lively songs for anyone who is still awake and talk about what's going on in there lives. There are a mix of Radio One presenters and depending on what time of day you listen too they vary. For example Reggie Yates, presents the top 40 on a sunay evening. He has a very enthusiastic voice and uses pauses and high loud projection to minipulate his audience with the songs. Radio One has a similar audience to ours but obviously they have all diffrent shows at diffrent times for diffrent sorts of audiences. Radio One is a national radio show so it broadcasts over the whole of England so it has to cover World wide news and also has to talk about whats happining evrywhere. Radio One interacts with there audience by using text, emails, phone ins, podcats. They also have a Webcam and a very good website where you can listen to all of there shows again. They have alot of famouse guests, new artists and celebritys come in and chat to them on diffrent shows. Radio One also take part in alot of Telivison being part of the BBC and also take part in festivals, events and Gigs around England.

Galaxy Radio Birmingham 102.2

Galaxy Radio is  a regional radio show broadcated over Birmingham and the West Midlands. Sacha Brooks is morning presenter 10:00 Untill 1:00pm on my local radio Galaxy she is very bubbly and loud and she laughs alot. Her tone is loud and she is very clear for the audience to hear her. Galexys mode of adress is direct and does have formal information but doesnt take too much of a formal way of presenting it. Galaxy is my regional radio station and it covers the West Midlands and advertises local concerts, gigs, compitions, wheres good to go ect. They encourage the audience to interact by texting, phoning or emailing in to the show with there requests or shout outs. They Also have the latest news and road information for that regional area. Galexy fits in very well with our groups audience (15-24 year olds) because it talks about local colleges and unviversitys and also talks about where is good to go. As most of our group is from the regional area of the West Midlands we are aiming to advertise and talk about the same sort of things.
